When life gets busy it’s nice to come home to a calm and relaxing environment. A place to slow down, to enjoy your downtime and to recharge your battery. Your day might’ve been wonderful or just completely stressed, but your home should always make you feel well. What we look for in our home is an environment that’s uplifting, calming, inspiring and stress-free. Especially when you’re living in the city, with a lot of noise, people, fumes and clutter all around you. Simone and I love that our apartments are light, bright and a calming oasis in the midst of the chaos that’s city life.
A calm home makes for a calm heart. When everything feels balanced, feels right to you, it’s one less thing to worry or stress about. Giving everything in your home a designated place is often the first step, but even if you’re a bit of a chaotic person there are things you can do to calm down your home.
Add plants for a touch of nature
Think of it as pleasing all your senses. Your eyes want something soothing to look at but your nose wants to be happy as well. Adding fresh flowers or houseplants will not only add a pop of colour, but also liven things up. Nature might be hard to find in a city, so bring some indoors. Some plants even have the power to purify the air in your home, that’s a nice bonus!
Make your house smell divine
The greenery that you’ve just added to your home will add to a nice smelling house, but scented candles or room sprays are also a way to go. Or cleaning products, if that’s your thing! What would you like your house to smell like when you walk through the door? Maybe that’s the smell of a wood stove or freshly made coffee. Make it happen, make it work for you. Make some potpourri, burn those candles, open the windows and let in some fresh air. It’ll do wonders!
Create a balance
Your furniture and decorations obviously play a huge role in the way your home feels to you and others. It’s the base of a calming home. You can add to it by adding some artwork of your choice or by changing the furniture/decorations around a bit. I often feel the urge to change around my furniture with the changing of the season. Make everything feel fresh and balanced again. And sometimes, all you need is a good cleaning session. Get rid (or store away) some things and make room for others.
Enhance the mood
Put on some music to enhance the current mood. Maybe those are your lazy Sunday morning vibes or your relaxing time on a Thursday night. Create a playlist or find one on Spotify that enhances the feeling of a happy home. Dance, listen, sing, let the music do its magic. Have you listened to our Monday Morning tunes?
Happy people make for a happy home
And lastly, a home without people is just an empty space. People make the home. And whether that’s just you on your own or your whole family or some friends, make sure that your actions, thoughts and feelings add to the calmness of your home. Make memories in your living room, you garden, your kitchen. Good times with those you love in a place you call home. Laughter, play, romance and happiness make for an enjoyable home. One that you will love to come home to.
