What’s that I hear? Oh right, the deafening silence of the alarm clock that’s not going off. So what’s waking me up then? Is it the watery winter sunshine peeking through the curtains? The smell of breakfast being prepared in the kitchen by my favourite person? Or is my brain just excited and ready for this Sunday morning? I stretch, I yawn as I pull the duvet covers tighter around me. My bed is warm and cozy. It’s still early in the morning. I roll onto my right side and you’re suddenly next to me. You’re sleepy, you’re cuddly. Am I awake or am I still dreaming? A tower of pancakes topped with whipped cream, fruit and syrup is on a plate in your hands. I smile. This might actually be the best morning ever.
Sunday morning: it’s our favourite
Okay, so this is where the dream ends. Today anyway. This single, alarm clock needing, busy girl usually lives another version of Sunday morning. But boy, do Simone and I love Sunday mornings. With or without a guy, with or without breakfast in bed and a clear sunny winter day ahead. They’re our favourite. And here’s why.
Sunday mornings are important to us. We wake up early during the week, are all work work work, busy busy busy. We try to create mindful moments, slow down our lives, but sometimes our lives just take over. We’re working, moving, dating, blogging, creating, playing, dreaming, doing, sleeping. And yes, we have to admit that we’ve had some pretty rough weekend mornings that haven’t been all ‘sunshine and breakfast in bed’. We’ve slept in until noon with mascara still on our eyelashes from the day before. Woke up feeling oh so tired from all the activities from the week that’s past. No pancake ingredients to be found in the kitchen, grocery shopping on an empty stomach needed.
Where’s the party?
But, Sunday mornings are important because our body, mind and soul need time to rest, to recharge, to let go, slown down and enjoy ourselves. To us, Sunday mornings should be like a little party. And if it’s your party, you decide who (or what) is invited. Sleep in or wake up and watch the sun rise. Read a book, wrapped in a blanket, whilst the sun comes up. Make breakfast in bed or cozy up in the softest dressing gown you can find and make yourself some breakfast. Enjoy a slow meal, no rush of being late to work or school. Start the day right by working out, going for a nature walk or practicing some gentle yoga. Write in your journal, meditate, be silence, pray, think. Put on your favourite morning playlist, dance, daydream, sing along. Grab those recipe books, make a list, go to the nearest farmers market and stock up on those fruits and vegetables. Is it noon already? Just in time to get todays to-do list finished. Start with chilling on the couch, then it’s time to slow down and finally there’s just enough time to do nothing.
Happy Sunday!
