How is it 2017 already? I feel like the older you get the faster the years go by. With the new year here, it is the perfect time for some reflection on the year that’s past and also looking ahead at what might come. Being thankful for how far you’ve come and for all the days that 2016 gave us. But also, as most people do, setting goals for the year ahead.
Although honestly, we don’t really believe in new year’s resolutions. Well, we do think they’re great. But to us, any day of the year is a good day to start and set new goals. Every morning is a fresh start. You can set goals every time you feel like it. And if that, for you, is today, the first day of the year, then let’s go for it!
Give yourself credit
It’s a healthy thing to set goals. To better yourself, to grow and learn. Maybe you’d like to eat healthier, work out more, learn a new language, take more time for yourself, say no more often, strengthen relationships or buy less stuff. These are all great things to strive for. But, it’s important to find a balance, to not only focus on what you still have to do. Take the time to look back, to give yourself some (or a lot of!) credit for all the things, however small or big, you’ve accomplished this year.
Make your ta-da list
Sit down, grab a piece of paper (this is the perfect time for some lovely stationary) and write your own ta-da list. You can make one for all the years of your life so far or focus on the year that has past. Think back through the months and list everything that comes to mind. Maybe you found a job, got your diploma, reconnected with a friend, learned how to drive, gave birth, fell in love, worked out more, lost some weight, ran a marathon, cooked more homemade meals, took more time for yourself… whatever it is, write it down, make your own ta-da list. After writing the list, re-read it and, most importantly, give yourself some applause. You did all of this, you accomplished these goals, you deserve the credit.
Don’t throw the list away. Keep it and create one each year. They’ll be so nice to look back on, a reminder of how far you’ve come. Well done you, you made it another year! Yes, there’s loads to do in the year ahead, but you’re ta-da list is here to remind you that you’ve done well, you’re great!
