When you step away from your day to day routine in search of some relaxation, it’s interesting to see what process you go through to get there. We’ve been on a week long vacation to the sunny and beautiful island Ibiza. And whilst there, reading a book in the sunshine near the pool, I started thinking about a certain topic: time.
Time is a recurring theme in our daily life. Waking up on time, being on time, knowing what time it is, managing time (preferably efficiently) and making the most of your time. It is, for many of us, what keeps our lives together, what structures our day. It’s also a pain. Being late, missing a deadline, not managing time. When time either goes too fast or too slow. Sometimes it feels like time is against us, like we’re fighting against time.
Our getaway to Ibiza made me more aware of how time oriented we are. And, most of all, made me realise how lovely it is to not have to focus on time at all. Eat when you’re hungry, read for hours on end. Waking up when the sun goes up instead of by the sound of your alarm clock. No feelings of stress because you’re late, no looking at your phone to see what time it is. Nothing. Time to daydream, time to sleep in, time to waste time, to be inefficiënt with time and follow your natural rhythm.
It almost felt like a shock to our system. A bit uneasy, unnatural at first. From the hustle and bustle of daily life, to the slow and relaxed Spanish way of living, to our slow mornings and relaxed days. But after a while (a non specified amount of time!) the uneasiness made room for relaxation. For happiness, at its best. And happiness has no limits, isn’t bound by time.
Feeling inspired by how we felt on our sunny getaway, we’re driven and motivated to keep this feeling alive in our daily lives back in the Netherlands. With small changes, from reading for hours (because why not?), to ‘wasting’ time by waking up slowly or enjoying a long meal with friends, we’re excited to keep these Ibiza feelings going!
Here are some of the photos we shot in the Old Town of Ibiza Town (D’Alt Villa), where time seems to have stopped. We hope these will bring some of those Ibiza vibes to you. Enjoy!
